  • Amazon invested an additional $5B in Anthropic, raising its total to $13B
  • Anthropic pledged $100B+ to AWS over 10 years, with revenue surpassing $3B annually

Amazon announced on April 20 (local time) that it has made an additional $5 billion investment in AI startup Anthropic. The latest funding brings Amazon's cumulative investment in Anthropic to $13 billion, with the potential to increase to $20 billion should Anthropic meet certain performance milestones.

The relationship between the two companies has expanded well beyond a simple investment into a sweeping cloud infrastructure partnership. Anthropic has committed to spending more than $100 billion on Amazon Web Services (AWS) technology over the next decade — a clear declaration that AWS will serve as the core infrastructure powering its Claude AI models.

"Building Infrastructure to Keep Pace with Surging Demand"

Anthropic's CEO stated that "scaling infrastructure to meet rapidly growing demand is the top priority," adding that the partnership with Amazon will allow the company to advance AI research while delivering Claude to customers more reliably.

Anthropic had previously announced in early April that its annualized revenue run rate surged threefold quarter-over-quarter, surpassing $3 billion — marking the first time the company had outpaced OpenAI on this metric and representing a significant inflection point in the AI revenue race. The latest investment is expected to be channeled primarily into infrastructure expansion to sustain this growth trajectory.

Warming White House Relations — But Military Use Dispute Remains Unresolved

Alongside this announcement, Anthropic's relationship with the Trump administration appears to be subtly shifting. Anthropic's CEO visited the White House last week for meetings with senior U.S. government officials. A White House spokesperson noted that the talks focused on "collaborative opportunities and shared approaches to addressing the challenges that accompany the expansion of AI technology."

Despite the improved tone, underlying tensions persist. In February, President Trump ordered the federal government to immediately halt its use of Anthropic's technology after the company refused to grant the Department of Defense unlimited access to its Claude models. Anthropic maintains its opposition to the use of its technology for mass surveillance or fully autonomous weapons systems, and is currently contesting in court the Defense Secretary's decision to place the company on a supply chain risk list.

Earlier this month, Anthropic unveiled its latest AI model, 'Mythos,' but withheld a public release citing potential cybersecurity risks.
